At the University of Winnipeg
At UWinnipeg, Design is considered a separate area of study within the Theatre department and all courses are offered within the BA or BA (Honours) program. What this means is that you have the option of concentrating on design specifically or of opting for some design credits along with other courses which all contribute to your degree. Moreover, none of our design courses require prior experience or previous technical credits from high school and the emphasis is on the communication of ideas, not necessarily artistic skill.
We offer design courses in sets, costumes and make-up (including prosthetics). Our courses are geared towards both the theatrical and film practitioner.
No one else in Manitoba provides the kind of intense, practical, hands-on design training that we do. Our courses are intensive and offer close, one-to-one attention by the instructor. Senior Design students may design one of the shows that make up the department’s “Season” and for the most committed design students we also offer practicum and special studies courses which you and your professor develop together for intensive training in a specific area. Of particular interest are our unique apprentice courses offered in association with professional and amateur theatres and high schools in Manitoba. As our partners, these companies help us give our students real life experience through working on one of their productions while at the same time earning academic credit.
It is possible to combine an interest in the artistic aspects of theatre and film (acting, directing, filmmaking, writing) with design studies and many students take advantage of our broad program offerings to do just that.
